This place was put up in a bout of one-upmanship during the 16th Century. The Jesuits got the last lick in over the Franciscans, Dominicans, and Augustinians, but may have had to take a couple liberties over the whole vow of poverty thing. Today it still makes for a mind boggling spot to explore, accessible from the heart of Quito.
